Garden Room Extension
In some instances, going down may be the only option for creating new accommodation for certain types of property and for this lower villa property in South Edinburgh options to expand and improve the access to the garden on a lower level were limited. Extensive excavations and underpinning were undertaken below and to the side of the rear offshoot to provide the space for a new extension and large utility room at the garden level.
The garden room is contained within the cube of the extension, with high levels of daylight provided by the sliding doors along the north wall and fixed rooflight above. A new staircase connects the new lower level with the existing dining area. The lead clad surround to the sliding doors, splayed to reduce contrast, adds an element of craft and texture reflecting the existing stonework.
