Westmill Road

Extension

Inserted into a challenging back-land site to the rear of the two storey traditional building (subdivided into two properties) on the Water of Leith, the extension provides a new entrance, kitchen, shower-room and stair to access the upper level of the upper dwelling. The form in plan and section is defined by the constraints of the site and sectional arrangement of the stair. Internally, the main uses are accommodated in a single tapering volume terminating at the almost fully glazed end wall which is subtly twisted to maximise the view of the garden below.

The construction utilises a rendered or cedar clad woodfibre insulation construction system to the walls and triple glazed windows and rooflights to create an extremely low energy and breathable addition to the property with high levels of daylight in defiance of the constrained site.
