Front Extension

The small and zinc clad front addition adds character and scale to the front of the conventional brick clad detached dwelling in south-west Edinburgh. The brief was to create an enlarged entrance hall and front door, and this has been achieved by the use of a simple form inserted into the internal corner of the L-shaped house.

The materials and formal language have been designed to contrast with the existing to accentuate the scale and distinctness of the entrance, with the large glazed entrance screen with its solid door and the side window framed in the simply detailed zinc clad surround. In turn, the galvanised metal steps and landing act as a bridge between the existing pathway and front door to emphasise the height of the entrance floating above the slope of the front garden.
